Q: What is Cable Internet?

A: Cable Internet is a form of broadband Internet access that uses cable infrastructure. Like digital subscriber lines and fiber optic networks, Cable Internet bridges the last kilometre or mile from the Internet provider to the subscriber. Unlike DSL that uses the existing telephone network, Cable Internet runs off dedicated network infrastructure.

Q: How does Cable Internet work?

A: For the setup, we run lines of fiber optics under the ground that are then divided out to sub stations. From these sub stations they connect to a main hub outside the home or complex, then through the wall into the home and are terminated to a wall box.

An Ethernet cord is then plugged into the wall box and into either a single connected computer or a router / switch / wireless access point for further distribution of the traffic.

Q: Why Cable?

A: Speed. The slowest cable connection we offer is 100Mb to our servers.

Q: Is my complex wired for Cable?

A: Please contact us by clicking on this link

Q: What can I do to increase the speed of my connection?

A: Get an appropriate antenna installed.
Install a download manager program that will allow you to make multiple connections to the same server. It is ideal for downloading big files like music from the internet.
Upgrade your subscription contract.

Q: I have more than one computer, can a Cape Connect installation integrate with my existing infrastructure?

A: Yes.

Q: Do Skype, MSN Messenger and similar programs work on the Cape Connect Service?

A: Yes they do.

Q: Do online games work on the Cape Connect infrastructure?

A: Yes they do.

Q: Will I be able to access my office network from home if I use Cape Connect.

Yes, using a VPN, you will. We can also shape your traffic to prioritise VOIP back to your office.

Q: What are my DNS settings?

A: If you break out in Somerset West, use these settings:

Primary DNS 192.168.65.138
Secondary DNS 192.168.58.58

If you break out in Cape Town, use these settings:

Primary DNS 192.168.58.58
Secondary DNS 192.168.65.138

Q: What are my email settings?

A: Cape Connect blocks SMTP port 25 on our network. Either use our mail relay server, or use port 587 or 465 for outgoing mail.

Our mail relay server is located at relay1.cape-connect.com Please note that this is an internal IP address. The only way you can reach it is if you are using our DNS servers. If you are not using our DNS servers, the server name will not resolve.

Ask your email service provider to enable port 587 authenticated SMTP on your email address if you do not want to use our relay servers.

Secure email sent via port 465 (ie Gmail) will function normally.

Q: How can I test the speed of my link?

A: Cape Connect Speed Test
